Keep the Light On
I was hesitant to write this, but I wanted to help and encourage other writers, so I decided to admit this and make myself vulnerable: I cried this week.
But, not only did I cry, I sobbed—big, gulping sobs filled with heartache.
I recently completed my first novel. I’ve had a couple of my articles published in a multicultural magazine, and one on a children’s e-zine, but this was the first book I’d ever written … to completion.
I was elated. But then, reality slapped me in the face when I began receiving rejection letters. Yeah. Rejection really sucks.
I don’t want to be corny or Hallmarky, but I will say that if you’ve invested hours, days, or years of mental, physical and emotional energy into your writing, don’t toss it all out the window. It’s easy to do that. It’s crushing to get rejected.
But think of it this way: the world needs to hear your voice, we need to be captivated by those words you have passionately written to create your imaginary world, and we need your compelling artistry.
Writers have a powerful gift. We can inspire someone to smile, and we can whisk them away to another world—just through our storytelling.
Don’t lose that “writer’s light” in you. Keep it on. I’m rooting for you.
